Copt Hewick Volunteer Fire Brigade -

probably the world's smallest fire brigade!

RW1 – road rescue unit/emergency tender, right hand locker equipment

At the scene of an RTC (road traffic collision) safety is paramount and so before any rescue operations can start the vehicle(s) involved must be stabilised by using hydraulic jacks and spreader plates to distribute the weight of the vehicle more widely. This is particularly important where a vehicle is on soft ground, e.g. a roadside verge, and the action of trying to raise the jacks would only cause the jacks to sink into the soft ground.

Hydraulically operated jacks, together with chocks and spreader plates are used to stabilise vehicles before attempting to rescue the occupants. More pictures of the equipment in use will be added later.
